What is surgical decompression for migraines?
Surgical decompression of the peripheral sensory nerves of the skull can significantly reduce the frequency, intensity, and duration of migraine episodes. This surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis under both general and local anesthesia and usually lasts between one and two hours.
If a patient has multiple migraine triggers, the procedure could be extended, especially if the affected areas are in different parts of the head. It is important to note that the intervention is not performed on the brain nor does it involve drilling into the skull bones.
Effectiveness of migraine surgery
Various studies indicate success rates exceeding 70%. Approximately one-third of patients achieve complete relief post-surgery, experiencing significant improvements in the frequency, duration, and intensity of their migraines, thus enhancing their quality of life.
Are you a candidate for this procedure?
- Those diagnosed with migraines by a specialist.
- Patients in whom sites of nerve compression can be accurately identified.
- Other criteria include the effectiveness of previous treatments, adverse effects of medications, and the severity of migraines. If BOTOX® or anesthetic injections have been effective, you are likely a good candidate.
Complications and aesthetic outcomes
Post-surgery recovery
It is possible to experience bruising and swelling, which typically subside within two weeks. Most people resume their daily activities within this timeframe. Depending on the treated area, it may be recommended to avoid strenuous exercise for up to three weeks.
